NOLA GIRL is a street art collection about desire and disaster, rebuild and ruin, love and truth in New Orleans. It interrogates space, how we exist in it, and how we experience it - with regard to urban disaster.
The city of New Orleans, damaged by Hurricane Katrina, is marked by blight, police surveillance, mass incarceration, Anti-Blackness, and colonial legacies. It is also fueled by resistance, survival, unity, and city-wide love and pride.

NOLA GIRL TAKES ON THE WORLD
NOLA GIRL confronts the issues of New Orleans rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and finds the same issues present in cities around the world: gentrification, poverty, mass incarceration, colonial legacies.
She is, however, a decolonial advocate and a heroine of the people.
NOLA GIRL is given shape by the powerful poems, pictures, memes, and illustrations that run throughout the text. In her adventures, NOLA GIRL tackles city council, urban planners, extraction industries, and more. During her adventures, she boldly states what many are unwilling to say. Her words are so effective that she can condense her critique into short and powerful one-line poems.
In addition to being an outspoken advocate for people who suffer urban decline and environmental degradation, she is also symbol for female empowerment - showing that “the personal is political.” She critiques her surroundings: from her cityscape to her family’s interpersonal dynamic. In doing so, she showcases the struggles that heroines have present in their everyday lives. She is the embodiment of black feminist geography and women’s critiques of their intimate spaces.
Without being a cliché hero in a cape, NOLA GIRL champions for the families and folk of urban environments and their livelihood. Whether in New Orleans - or in other cities - she takes a stance for people impinged upon by urban decline and its effects.
By confronting the trouble that ails us all,
NOLA GIRL takes on the world.
